This book presents the proceedings of the international conference “The Middle Ages in the Modern World,” held in Rome November 21-24, 2018. Attended by more than a hundred participants of different ages, educational backgrounds, and places of origin, the conference constituted a landmark in the study of medievalism: the historical discipline, now in full bloom, that investigates the ways in which the thousand-year period between 500 and 1500 was, and continues to be, presented, reconstructed, and imagined in successive eras. The book opens with a substantial bibliography drawn from all of its components, followed by the seven keynote lectures and ninety-three shorter texts - abstracts of the individual conference papers - organized along eight thematic pathways, which together provide a vivid image of the current state of the field.

A follow-up publication to the Handbook of Medieval Studies, this new reference work turns to a different focus: medieval culture. Medieval research has grown tremendously in depth and breadth over the last decades. Particularly our understanding of medieval culture, of the basic living conditions, and the specific value system prevalent at that time has considerably expanded, to a point where we are in danger of no longer seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. The present, innovative handbook offers compact articles on essential topics, ideals, specific knowledge, and concepts defining the medieval world as comprehensively as possible. Plutôt que d’alimenter de nouvelles controverses sur l’an mil, il s’agit ici d’étudier en profondeur la période - de 950 à 1050 environ - qui encadre le millénaire, dans un très large horizon qui va de la Scandinavie à Al-Andalus et de l’Atlantique aux marges du Caucase. Les hommes et leurs cadres de vie (habitat, occupation du sol, culture matérielle) sont désormais mieux connus grâce aux données récentes de l’archéologie et des paléo-sciences de l’environnement, ici rassemblées et confrontées. Au cœur des aspects économiques et sociaux, l’accent est mis sur l’étude des structures familiales, qui a connu ces dernières années des avancées tout à fait remarquables. Les problèmes de l’économie seigneuriale, des rapports entre aristocratie et paysannerie, des formes du pouvoir et de l’encadrement social sont présentés dans leur diversité géographique au travers d’exemples germaniques, français, italiens, etc. Dans le vaste domaine des cultures, des langues et des représentations mentales, certains axes ont été privilégiés : l’évolution des langages tant dans leur expression orale qu’écrite. Mais retenons aussi l’attention portée aux sensibilités religieuses : les formes de la piété, l’émergence de nouveaux comportements au sein de l’Église comme à ses marges (mouvements de la paix de Dieu, hérésie). Making Early Medieval Societies explores a fundamental question : what held the small- and large-scale communities of the late Roman and early medieval West together, at a time when the world seemed to be falling apart? Historians and anthropologists have traditionally asked parallel questions about the rise and fall of empires and how societies create a sense of belonging and social order in the absence of strong governmental institutions. This book draws on classic and more recent anthropologists' work to consider dispute settlement and conflict management during and after the end of the Roman Empire. Contributions range across the internecine rivalries of late Roman bishops, the marital disputes of warrior kings, and the tension between religious leaders and the unruly crowds in western Europe after the first millennium - all considering the mechanisms through which conflict could be harnessed as a force for social stability or an engine for social change.
